Gamifying Education: Red Cross and PaGamO Ignite Passion for English and First Aid in Hualien

Secretary General Wang Shu-fang attends the event in person to cheer on the young competitors and presents awards to commend the outstanding students who excelled in the English Literacy Esports Finals.

"Who knew that learning English could ignite the same passion as competitive esports?"

On May 16, the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China (Taiwan), in collaboration with the PaGamO online educational platform, hosted the "2026 English Literacy Esports Physical Finals" at the College of The Arts, National Dong Hwa University. This event marks a milestone in the joint "Digital English Literacy Subsidy Program," bringing together 110 primary school students from remote areas across Hualien. Amid enthusiastic cheers and applause, the students engaged in a dynamic competition that seamlessly integrated rigorous academic learning with interactive gaming.

The finalists earned their places through extensive online learning modules and rigorous qualifying tournament brackets. Only the top 30 students from each category advanced to this highly anticipated physical final. In the ultimate showdown, competitors were challenged to maximize their scores by answering literacy questions within a strict 15-minute window, vying for territory in PaGamO’s signature tactical strategy format. With the matches broadcast live to the venue, the palpable excitement from peers and educators transformed the language-learning event into a thrilling arena reminiscent of professional esports.

This visionary initiative stems from the remote English digital learning program launched by the Red Cross in Hualien in 2025. In response to the unique challenges faced by Hualien—a region frequently affected by natural disasters—the Red Cross provided 1,015 complimentary PaGamO premium accounts to students in grades three through six across remote primary schools. The initiative aims to enhance both language proficiency and digital literacy through gamified education. To select the elite finalists for this event, two comprehensive county-wide online qualifying tournaments were successfully conducted in late December 2025.

Beyond the core academic competition, the event serves as an essential platform for disaster prevention and first-aid education. During tournament intermissions, the host conducted interactive disaster prevention quizzes, which met with enthusiastic participation from the students. While the final scores were being tabulated, certified first-aid instructors from The Red Cross Society of Hualien County led a hands-on CPR demonstration. Many children eagerly volunteered to practice the life-saving techniques on stage, effectively extending their learning from virtual academic challenges to real-world safety resilience.

Whether cultivating English proficiency through cutting-edge digital platforms or honing critical response skills through disaster preparedness drills, these young learners embody the philosophy of "learning by playing, learning by doing"—building robust capabilities and fostering a resilient foundation for the challenges of tomorrow.

The Society remains committed to fostering a stable, sustainable digital learning environment where children can pursue their education with peace of mind amidst adversity, thereby expanding their future horizons and unlocking their full potential.

Seamlessly integrating disaster preparedness and first-aid education into the event, the venue sees numerous children eagerly taking the stage for hands-on, practical training.

The children immerse themselves fully in practicing CPR compressions; their deep focus and earnest expressions capture one of the most moving moments of the entire event.

Winning or losing was never the primary focus; instead, the children returned home enriched with a profound sense of accomplishment, newfound confidence, and invaluable knowledge of disaster preparedness and first aid—rendering every participant a true winner.
