IFRC and Libyan Red Crescent Responded to Catastrophic Flooding in Libya

Teams & volunteers from LibyaRC were the first on the ground, evacuating people & providing first aid & search & rescue efforts./ Libyan RC

On Sunday, September 10th, Storm Daniel struck northeastern Libya, bringing severe weather conditions including strong winds and sudden heavy rainfall. Several areas in northeastern Libya were affected, including Derna, Benghazi, Tobruk, Toukra, Talmeitha, Almarj, Taknes, al-Owailia, Bayada, Albayda, Shahhat, and Sousa, among others.This resulted in extensive flooding, with significant impacts on infrastructure. Roads were submerged and blocked by floodwaters. The dam in Derna was damaged, leading to flooding that submerged entire communities. In some areas, floodwaters reached heights of up to 3 meters. According to reports from the Libyan Red Crescent on the ground, approximately 10,000 people are currently missing. The death toll is staggering, with expectations that it will reach thousands in the coming days. 

The head of Libya’s government, Osama Hamad, has announced that the situation is catastrophic and unprecedented, and has called on medical personnel and medical assistants to go to Derna.

In Derna communication lines and power networks  are paralyzed.  Libyan Red Crescent are on the ground assisting with search & rescue. A devastating  Flood- Heavy Rains has struck  Libya, resulting in about 10,000 people missing. They are in urgent need of our assistance.
