TRC responded to the IFRC Afghanistan Earthquake and supported recovery efforts in Afghanistan

TRC responded to the IFRC Afghanistan Earthquake and supported recovery efforts in Afghanistan

On June 22, 2022, a seismic event measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale rocked the southeastern region of Afghanistan, resulting in extensive devastation in areas that were already grappling with vulnerability in the provinces of Khost and Paktika. Tragically, the toll amounted to a staggering 1,163 lives lost and 2,949 individuals injured. The primary cause of fatalities stemmed from the collapse of buildings. Further analysis through secondary data assessment and earthquake intensity mapping revealed a disheartening statistic: approximately 70 percent of residences within regions exposed to high-intensity tremors suffered various degrees of damage, ranging from impairment to complete destruction.
